A friend suggested I have a quick look at PRTG for network and device monitoring and alerting.  I'm impressed so far, what was rather good was the freeware (read no nagware) setup that allows you to get a feeling for the fully featured solution, all up and running in 5 minutes without any invasive seventy part questionaire - http://www.paessler.com/prtg
